What is an Absolute Monarch? A ruler who holds total power over the government and the lives of his/her people Absolute monarchs are different from a regular monarch in that: Their degree of power is greater They claim a deeper and broader amount of powers

Characteristics of an Absolute Monarchy Divine Right Claims: The king is king because God made him king The king is “divinely approved” to rule Attempts to control all people in the kingdom Via favors or suppression

Characteristics of an Absolute Monarchy Control over the kingdom’s finances King controls all of the money No longer needs anyone’s approval Raises money via taxes, tariffs, etc. Has a system of tax collectors whose job is to go around and collect the money

Characteristics of an Absolute Monarchy Massive bureaucracies Bureaucracy A group of non-elected government or administrative officials Implement the laws and functions of the government or another institution Paid by the state & represented the king Owned their wealth and position to their employment Therefore, usually very grateful and loyal to the king

Characteristics of an Absolute Monarchy Standing Armies Medieval system of knights thrown out Full time armies kept on guard
