Physical Activity and Your Health FOS Mr. Christman
2
Objectives 1) Describe the effects of regular physical activity on body systems. 2) Analyze how physical activity will enhance health. 3) Describe the five areas of health- related fitness.
3
Physical Activity and Your Health What kinds of physical activities do you enjoy? Do you feel that you exercise enough everyday?
4
What is Physical Activity Physical activity is any form of movement that causes your body to use energy. -purposeful or routine
5
What is Physical Activity Many forms of physical activity can improve your physical fitness. Physical fitness is the ability to carry out daily tasks easily and have enough reserve energy to respond to unexpected demands.
6
Benefits of Physical Activity What are some benefits of physical activity?
7
Benefits of Physical Activity Benefits to Physical Health: -makes your body stronger -increases your energy -improves posture -improves motor responses -strengthens muscles and bones -reduces risk of serious diseases
8
Benefits of Physical Activity 1) Cardiovascular System: Physical activity strengthens the heart muscle, allowing it to pump blood more efficiently.
9
Benefits of Physical Activity 2) Respiratory System: Physical activity helps your respiratory work more efficiently (you will breathe larger amounts of air and the lungs won’t tire as easily).
10
Benefits of Physical Activity 3) Nervous System: Physical activity can improve your reaction time by helping you respond more quickly to stimuli.
11
Benefits of Physical Activity Benefits to Mental/Emotional Health: -reduces stress -helps you sleep better -helps manage anger and frustration -improves your mood -reduces risk of depression
12
Benefits of Physical Activity Benefits to Social Health: -builds self-confidence -gives you the opportunity to interact and cooperate with others -helps manage stress which can enhance relationships with others
13
Risks of Physical Inactivity More than one in three teens do not participate regularly in physical activity (that is for at least 20 minutes three times a week). Only 55 percent of all U.S. students attend a physical education class one or more days a week. Only 29 percent of teens attend a daily physical education class. This has decline from 42 percent in 1992.
14
Risks of Physical Inactivity With these statistics in mind, it is clear that many teens have a sedentary lifestyle. A sedentary lifestyle is a way of life that involves little physical activity.
15
Risks of Physical Inactivity Instead of being physically active, teens are spending their time watching TV, playing video games, or working on the computer.
16
Risks of Physical Inactivity Negative effects of a sedentary lifestyle: -unhealthful weight gain (linked to cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer) -increased risk of osteoporosis -reduced ability to manage stress
17
Elements of Fitness To be physically fit, you must work on all five of the health-related components of physical fitness. What are these five components?
18
Elements of Fitness 1) Cardiovascular endurance: Cardiovascular endurance is the ability of the cardiovascular system to utilize and send fuel and oxygen to the body during long periods of activity.
19
Elements of Fitness Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Keeping your cardiovascular system healthy is the most effective way of reducing your risk of developing the disease.
20
Elements of Fitness 2) Muscular Strength: Muscular strength is the amount of force a muscle can exert.
21
Elements of Fitness You need muscular strength for activities that involve lifting, pushing, or jumping. This is necessary to carry out many daily tasks.
22
Elements of Fitness 3) Muscular Endurance: Muscular endurance is the ability of the muscles to perform physical tasks over a period of time without becoming fatigued.
23
Elements of Fitness Similar to muscular strength, muscular endurance is needed for activities that involve lifting, pushing, or pulling repeatedly. This gives you the necessary endurance to carry out daily tasks without becoming fatigued.
24
Elements of Fitness 4) Flexibility: Flexibility is the ability to move a body part through a full range of motion.
25
Elements of Fitness Being flexible can increase your physical performance, help you feel more comfortable, and reduce the risk of muscle strains and other injuries.
26
Elements of Fitness 5) Body Composition: Body composition is the ratio of body fat to lean body tissue (muscle, bone, water, connective tissue).
27
Elements of Fitness To look and feel your best, it is helpful to have some idea of your body composition (how much of your body is composed of fat and how much is composed of everything else). In general, males with 25% or more body fat and females with 30% or more body fat are at risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Carrying too much weight also places added stress on the skeletal system.
28
Physical Activity and Your Health 1) School Board Letter (15 pts): Write a letter to the school board stating why we should have more physical education in school. Use at least 5 facts from the lesson to support your ideas. 1) Physical Activity
