3 Age of Faith: Puritans wrote about their faith Genre: letters, journals, diaries, and sermons Puritan life was centered around a theocracy Believed the world outside of the community was ruled by Satan. Believed in predestination The Great Awakening: reaction against the world-wide ‘Enlightenment’ which contradicted Puritan values.

4 The Enlightenment influenced men such as Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. Rationalist literature was very popular. Genre: argumentative and persuasive essays, speeches, pamphlets, formal documents, etc. Believed knowledge/truth could be reached through science and reason Believed in deism and humanitarianism Believed in natural laws of the universe and the natural rights of man
