3 How are students placed into ELD classes? NEW Students: CELDT data  ELD 1: Beginning and Early Intermediate  ELD 2: Intermediate  ELD 3: Early Advanced Returning Students: multiple criteria  CELDT data  STAR data for English/Language Arts  Grades (for incoming 7 th and 8 th grade students)  Writing Assessment  SRI scores (for System 44 or Read 180)  Teacher recommendation (Spring 2013)

9 Expectations for ELD Students ELD Students should:  Attend school regularly and always arrive on time  Actively engage in all lessons  Complete and submit assignments on time  Practice reading, writing and speaking English  Speak English in class!  Treat the teacher and classmates with respect  TRY! Ask questions to clarify understanding  Work Hard!

10 How will you know if your child is making progress? PowerSchool ELD Standards Reports Grades in ALL classes District Writing Assessments Feedback from Teachers Scholastic Reading Inventory Tests throughout the Year

13 How can I support my student? Communicate “to and from” School  Use Parent Portal to check status of your student’s tests, assignments and grades  Check your student’s Agenda regularly  Check homework for accuracy, not just completion  Encourage your student to read English!  Build time to talk with your student, to check on their progress  Contact the teacher if you have questions or concerns. Don’t wait until it’s too late!  Contact the counselor if you have questions or concerns

14 When is my student ready to exit ELD? In California, students usually are ready to exit ELD after 5-7 years In Arcadia, students usually are ready to exit ELD after 3-5 years Students must meet the following criteria:  CELDT: Early Advanced or Advanced  CST (Math AND English): Basic 325 or higher  English or ELD grades: C or higher  GPA: 2.0  Writing Assessment Score: 3.5 or higher (out of 6 points)

15 What if I have concerns about my child’s ELD Placement? Contact your student’s ELD teacher by phone or e-mail. Meet with the teacher and counselor to review your student’s academic progress and discuss options. Parents may request a written withdrawal form to remove their students from the program, but they may NOT make placement decisions within the ELD program. If parents withdraw their students, students are placed in a general education program. Students MUST continue to take CELDT annually until they meet reclassification criteria.
