Graphing Direct Proportions
3
1. Write an equation that represents the relationship between the distance ran an the time spent running. d = 9t 2. Name the constant of proportionality and describe what it represents in this problem situation. The constant of proportionality represents Antonio’s rate, which is 9 miles per hour.
4
3. Complete the table to show the amount of time spent running and the distance run using the equation you wrote in #1. TimeDistance 0 0.25 4.5 0 2.25 0.5 d = 9t d = 9(0) d = 0 d = 9t d = 9(.25) d = 2.25 d = 9t 4.5 = 9t 0.5 = t Finish the table and work on #4 in your groups…5 minutes.

X-coordinateY-coordinate 0.252.25 0.54.5 6. Explain your conclusion from Question 5. Finish the table in your groups…5 minutes The ratios are all equivalent to the constant of proportionality. Since the time and distance vary directly, the ratio of any distance to the corresponding time would have to be 9. Read for me please… 7. Why do you think (0,0) was not included in the table of ratios?
6
8. Locate the points (1, 9) and (1.5, 13.5) on your graph for Question 4. The horizontal distance is 0.5 hour. a.What is the horizontal distance (from left to right) from 1 to 1.5? b. What is the vertical distance from 9 to 13.5 on the graph? The vertical distance is 4.5 miles. c. What is the ratio of the vertical distance to the horizontal distance? Work in your groups on #9-11 until the bell rings. If you finish work on your homework.

The end of Day 1 for Chapter 2.5!
8
1. Finish the table. 2. Find the constant of Proportionality. 3. Make a graph and plot your findings 4. Is there direct variation? # of tourists# of drivers 243 5 48 64 80

Skip Problem 2 on page 110 & 111. Turn to page 112 and read for me please… Now work on #1 in your groups…3 minutes… 1.a. What do you notice about the points you plotted? The points don’t appear to make a straight line. Also if the plotted points were to make a straight line, the line would not pass through the origin (0,0).
10
The 2 points that I chose are (3, 16) and (7, 26) Since the 2 ratios are not equivalent to each other, there is no constant of proportionality. So this is a non-proportional relationship. Skip c.
11
Work on all of #1 and #2 in your groups until the end of class. If you finish, work on your homework.
