Introduction Lathe is forerunner of all machine tools.
Lathe is one of the most important machine tools in the metal working industry. A lathe operates on the principle of a rotating work piece and a fixed cutting tool. Lathe machine is also know as “parent of theentire tool family”.

TYPES OF LATHE MACHINE Engine lathe or centre lathe Bench lathe
Tracer lathe Capstan and Turret lathe Automatic lathe CNC lathe
6
MAIN PARTS OF LATHE MACHINE
Bed Headstock Tailstock Carriage Feed Mechanism Screw cutting Mechanism
7
ENGINE LATHE The most common form of lathe, motor driven
And comes in large variety of sizes and shapes.
8
TURRET LATHE Used when many duplicate parts required.
Equipped with multisided tool post (turret) to which several different cutting tools mounted.
9
BENCH LATHE A bench top model usually of low
power used to make precision machine small work piece.
10
TRACER LATHE A lathe that has the ability to follow a template to copy a shape or contour.
11
AUTOMATIC LATHE A lathe in which the work piece is automatically fed and removed without use of an operator. It requires very less attention after the setup has been made and the machine loaded.
12
CNC LATHE A highly automated lathe, where both cutting, loading, tool changing, and part unloading are automatically controlled by computer coding.
13
CUTTING OPERATION
14
Various Cutting Operations
Turing – produces straight, conical, curved, or grooved work pieces Facing – produces a flat surface at the end of the part Boring – to enlarge a hole Drilling - to produce a hole Cutting off – to cut off a work peiece Threading – to produce threads Knurling – produces a regularly shaped roughness
