1. TOURISTIC PRESENTATION OF THE DISTRICT OF BRCKO

3. Brcko is situated in the north- east Bosnia and Herzegovina on the right bank of Sava River and covers the area of 493 km 2 (1% of the B&H territory).

4. The important junction of local and international roads leading from East to West and from North to South defines its well-located tourist and geographic position. Brcko is located about 200 km away from Sarajevo and Belgrade, and about 300 km away from Zagreb. It is only 30 km away from the international highway of the Pan- European character – Corridor X (the Belgrade-Zagreb highway).

5. Thanks to the quality of its roads and suitable location in relation to other road communications, Brcko has built up an image of a transit city and important transportation junction in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

6. Brcko has a moderate continental climate with warm summers and moderately cold winters.

7. According to the unofficial estimates about 100.000 people live in the area of Brcko.

8. As a fortified settlement Brcko was mentioned for the first time in 1526 and 1533. According to some literary sources, it started developing after 1548 when a road to Tuzla was built.

10. Since March 8, 2000 Brcko has had the status of a district in Bosnia and Herzegovina and today it is an example of a successfully developed local community.

11. In buildings of historic importance and of contemporary business and trade function one can see old and modern achievements of human creativeness in Brcko.

20. Brcko has also long tradition in education. In 1883 the School of Trade was established in Brcko (the only one in B&H). In 1923/24 the Academy of Trade was established in Brcko and in 1963 it was transformed into the School of Economics. In 1961 the College of Economics and Commerce was established and since 1976 the University of Economics has been existing in Brcko.

21. Sava is an international navigable river. Its port is the only river port in Bosnia and Herzegovina of an international status recognized in 2006.

22. Sava River and its attractions have large tourist potentials such as sports, recreation, swimming, fishing, picnic, motonautical, etc.

23. Rural areas around Brcko maintain rural architecture, tradition and customs that have been created throughout centuries. Richness of folklore, traditional dances, gastronomy as well as natural beauties of rural resorts make way for rural tourism.

For many centuries now different cultures, traditions and customs, which have been inherited and preserved until the present times through the activities of cultural clubs, associations and institutions, have interlocked in Brcko. Today Brcko is a city where recognized cultural events and activities take place throughout the year.
