Module 6 Instructor: Brenda Taylor

 In this folder, you will be introduced to the basic characteristics of textur, which is the surface quality of objects.  2 types: ◦ Tactile – real, physical, can actually touch it. ◦ Visual – illusion, implied  You will be directed to a website for more examples of texture: http://www.writedesignonline.com/re sources/design/rules/balance.html

 There is information about the different types of texture in this folder: tactile, visual, and how it is used in photography.  http://www.betterphoto.com/gallery/dynoGall2.asp?catID=386 Go to this link to see more examples of how texture is used in photography.  Here’s another one: http://www.ehow.com/how_2255078_add-texture-photo- using-photoshop.html  Impasto – used in painting to add texture.  Several sites to visit for examples: http://emptyeasel.com/2007/07/26/what-is-impasto-thick- textured-paint/ http://emptyeasel.com/2008/02/26/the-art-of-texture- impasto-oil-paintings-by-trisha-lamoreaux/ http://www.ehow.com/video_4538403_expressionist-portrait- paint-marking-impasto.html

You have an assignment in this folder:  You will be asked to create a texture on cardboard.  After you have created your “very creative” textures, you are to paint it with acrylic paint, spray paint, whatever you choose.  Next, you will photograph it and post it in the warm up texture forum.

 Take some close up photos of items/objects with texture.  Upload these into your computer and use a photo editing software to crop the image so you only see the texture (nothing around it).  Play around with the color to create really interesting effects.  Post your picture in the extra credit forum at the top of the page.  Look at the photos of your classmates, choose the one you like the best, and tell the author why. Tell others what they could do to improve their photo.  Email me to let me know that you did the assignment.

 Texture and Balance Assignment: 1.Pick one of the four types of balance and illustrate it on a piece of cardboard, or some other surface that is sturdy. It needs to be large, at least 8 1/2" by 11" or larger. 2.Next, you will add texture to your picture. Next, if you haven't already, you will add color. Finish it off to where it looks good. Do your best! 3.Then photograph your picture and post it on the "texture and balance forum". 4.Post it as "Balance Project." in the subject box. I can't wait to see it!

 In this folder, you will be introduced to a French photographer named Henri Cartier-Bresson. He is considered to be one of the top 10 photographers of all time. His specialty is balance.  Some sites to learn about him: http://www.photo-seminars.com/Fame/bresson.htm. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henri_Cartier-Bresson http://www.afterimagegallery.com/bresson.htm  Info about: Jeffrey Hogue, impasto artist, Mattias Gustavsson blogs about artists' use of texture effects for video games, and more texture photography,

 Assignment: Check out the artwork forums from this week (texture warm up, AND texture and balance forum). By now there should be several examples of what we have learned in this lesson for you to critique. Respond to your classmates' forum pictures by answering the questions below: 1. Pick two pictures you really like. Tell why. 2. Is there one picture that best represents one of the types of balance we learned about? Which one is it? 3. How do you feel about your pictures? Is there anything you would do differently if you could do them over?  click add new discussion topic and put "critique forum" in the subject box

 Enrichment activity: 20 extra credit points 1. Get a photo of yourself either by asking someone to take your picture with your camera, or take one of yourself by holding the camera out in front of your face. If you already have a good one of yourself in your computer you can use that. 2. Using photo editing software play around with layering (adding texture) to your picture. Try some special effects. Get something that you like that alters the picture in a good way and post it on the extra credit forum. Be sure you put "texture self portrait" in the subject box... Let me know if you choose to do this so I can be sure and give you the extra credit points.photo editing software 3. These sites offer help: http://www.ehow.com/how_2255078_add-texture-photo-using- photoshop.html http://www.thewebsqueeze.com/web-design-tutorials/using-texture- layers-to-enhance-your-photographs.html You can also do this in Flickr, Photoshop, etc.
