New Science Standards New Science with Education Education (SEEd) Standards for grades 6-8 were adopted December 2015. Standards written by teams of Utah Teachers/Higher Ed. All state standards have been based national research SEEd Standards are based on NRC’s A Framework for K-12 Science Education Based on 3D Science: Disciplinary Core Ideas (Science content) Science and Engineering Practices (Similar to our current ILOs) Crosscutting Concepts

Why New Utah Science Standards? Current Standards are 10-20 Years old Some content is out dated and science has changed Science Education Research has changed Needs of Students have changed Current Utah Science standards (even with the lacking areas above) are some of the strongest in the nation but still needed updates and adjustments Improve science content Better Integrate content, practices, and crosscutting concepts For K-8 – Improve learning progressions

What’s the Difference? Current Science Standards Broken into 3 Parts Content (Standards, Objectives, Indicators) ILOs Literacy Standards Content is explicit with examples down to indicator level New SEEd Standards All parts are integrated Each Standards contains content, practices (ILOs), and literacy ideas Content contains general ideas – some standards have emphasis and examples to add clarification

6-8 SEEd Standards Timeline 6-8 Grade SEEd 2015-16 Adoption/PD Prep 2016-17 Preparation/PD 2017-18 Statewide Year 1 – Operational field test 2018-19 Statewide Year 2 - Full Implementation What PD will there be? - USTA Winter Conference Feb 2016 – Provo, UT - June 2016 - District/ Charter leaders building capacity training - Join SSECC Mailing List for info at: tinyurl.com/ssecctinyurl.com/ssecc State/District PD for 16-17 What does Operational Field Test/Full implementation mean? - Operational Field Test refers to a first round SAGE assessment that covers the SEEd Standards - Full Implementation – Full SAGE assessment support
