Frigid Fridays On each Friday last January, the temperature was a record low temperature for the date. On Friday, January 30, the mercury dropped to 5°F, which was 7 degrees higher than the low temperature on the Friday before. The low on January 9 was 2 degrees lower than the low temperature on January 16. On the first Friday of the month, the low temperature was 3 degrees lower than that on January 23. The low temperature on the Friday in the middle of the month was 6 degrees higher than the low temperature on the first Friday. The temperature on the first Friday, January 2nd was -5°F. What was the low temperature reading for each Friday of the month?

Solution DateLow Temperature Reading January 2 -5°F January 9 -1°F January 16 1°F January 23 -2°F January 30 5°F

Do Now: 04-27-16 You owe $225 on your credit card. You make a $55 payment and then purchase $87 worth clothes at Dillards. What integer that represents the balance owed on the credit card?
4
Do Now: 04-28-16 A monkey sits on a limb that is 25ft above the ground. He swings up 10ft,climbs up 6 ft more then jumps down 13ft. How far off the ground is the monkey? Mary has $267 in checking account. She writes checks for $33, $65, $112. What is the balance in her account?
5
Do Now: 04-29-16 Name the three rules of adding/subtracting integers?
7
First let’s review adding/subtracting integers! When the signs are the same, add the integers and keep the sign. When the signs are different, subtract the integers and keep the sign of the larger digit. Keep, Change, Change
8
Add Integers 1.18 + (-5) = 2.-10 + (-15) = 3.6 + 10 = 4.-24 + 19 = 5.-18 + (-20) = 13 -25 16 -5 -38
9
Rule for subtracting integers To subtract integers, add the opposite. What does this mean? Keep, Change, Change Keep the 1 st integer the same Change the subtraction sign to addition. Change the sign of the second integer. Then follow the rules for addition.
10
Let’s try an example. -5 – (-2) -5 + 2 keep, change, change Opposite sign subtract and keep the sign of the larger digit. -5 + 2 = -3
11
Let’s try an example -4 – 3 -4 + (-3) keep, change, change Same sign add the integers and keep the sign. -4 + (-3) = -7
12
Example 6 – (-4) 6 + 4 Keep, Change, Change 10 Now follow the rules for adding integers!
13
Example 18 - 20 18 + -20 Keep, Change, Change -2 Now follow the rules for adding integers!
14
Time for some practice! 1.-9 – 5 = 2.27 – (-8) = 3.-3 – (-1) = 4.-8 – 9 = 5.14 – 17 = 6.4 – (-19) = -14 35 -2 -17 -3 23
15
One more time what is the rule? Add the opposite. Keep, Change, Change Keep the 1 st integer, Change the sign to addition, Change the 2 nd integer. Then follow the rules for adding integers.
