Adding Integers KMS 7 TH GRADE

Adding Integers Rules  To add integers with the same sign: you add the absolute values and keep the sign.  Example A : 4 + 5 = 9  Example B: -4 + -5 = -9

Your Turn  10 + 13 =  23  -10 + -13=  -23

Adding Integers Rules  To add integers with different sign: you subtract the absolute values and keep the sign of the number farthest from zero.  Example A : (-12) + 9 =  12 – 9 = 3  is farther from zero so the answer is (-3)

Your Turn  16 + (-12) =  16 – 12= 4  16 is farther from zero so the answer is positive 4.

Subtracting Integers Rule  To subtract integers: Add its opposite  Then use addition rules  Example A: 8 – (-4)=  8 + (+4) = 12

Subtracting Integers Rule  Example B: -12 – 4=  -12 + (-4)=  -12 + -4 = -16

Try this one on your own.  -6 – (-5)=  -6 + (+5)  6-5 = 1  Answer is – 1 because -6 is farther from zero.

Multiplying and Dividing Integers  Multiplying and Dividing Integers with the same sign: Answer is positive  Example – 4 x -5 = 20  Example 4 x 5 = 20  Example -30 ÷ - 5 = 6  Example 30 ÷ 5= 6

Multiplying and Dividing Integers  Multiplying and Dividing Integers with different signs: Answer is negative  Example – 8 x 5 = -40  Example 4 x (-6) = -24  Example 50 ÷ (- 5) = -10  Example (-28) ÷ 4 = -7

Your Turn  - 6 x -7 =  42  - 54 ÷ 9=  -6
