WHAT SHOULD YOU BE DOING? Get your Learning Logs out and answer the following questions: What is one thing you have learned by working with someone in the opposite grade this unit? What are some of the values you need to know to solve for circumference & area of a circle? When you’re done, put your Learning Log away, and wait for further instructions.

WHAT IS A CYLINDER?

A cylinder is a 3D shape that with two parallel and congruent bases

WHAT DOES THE NET OF A CYLINDER LOOK LIKE? What shapes make up the Net of a Cylinder? What are the area formulas for those shapes?

WHAT DOES THE NET OF A CYLINDER LOOK LIKE? What shapes make up the Net of a Cylinder? - Circles - A Rectangle What are the area formulas for those shapes? Area Rectnagle = Base x Height Area Circle = Π r 2

EXAMPLE: SURFACE AREA OF A CYLINDER What is the surface area of the cylinder bellow? H = 11 cm R = 3 cm

EXAMPLE: SURFACE AREA OF A CYLINDER What is the surface area of the cylinder bellow? H = 11 cm R = 3 cm Area Circle = πr r = π x (3) x (3) = 28.26cm 2 28.26cm 2 x 2 = 52.52cm 2 Area Rectangle = base x height = Circumference x Height = 2πr x h = 2 x π x 3 x 11 = 207.24cm 2 Surface Area Cylinder = 207.24 + 52.52 = 259.76cm 2 As there are two ends to a cylinder, we multiply the area of the circular end by 2. In the case of cylinders, the base of the rectangular face is equal to the circumference of the circular end.

BOOKWORK In your assigned groups complete the following bookwork questions: Pages 186/187 #’s: 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 When you’re done, get a set of Pentominoes, and see how many combinations you can come up with.
