1 Do now: Describe what you can see in the picture. What is the message of the cartoon? What is the cartoonist saying about Stalin’s reaction to the Truman Doctrine? Why has the cartoonist used a pipe to illustrate their point?

2 The Causes of the Berlin Airlift L/O: To investigate the main reasons why Stalin blockaded Berlin in 1948 and America’s reaction Do now: Stick your copy of this map into your book. Describe what the map is showing you and what you can learn about Germany at the end of the Second World War.

At the Yalta and Potsdam conferences it was decided that after its defeat, Germany would be split into four parts. Each part would be governed by either USA, USSR, Britain for France. Germany in 1945. Using your knowledge of Capitalism and Communism, describe how life might be different in the USA and Russian Zones.

Suggest what Stalin might have though about the creation of Bizonia and Trizonia. Is there anything Stalin could do about it? Explain your solutions. Think about the differences between communism and capitalism. How might these changes effect the German people? What would people in the West think? What would people in the East think?

7 What Happened? 24th of June 1948 – Stalin cut off land access (road, rail and canal) to Berlin. Stalin was hoping the Allies would pull out Berlin. Truman was determined to stick to the Truman Doctrine. He wanted to prevent a communist take over of West Berlin.
