Adding and Subtracting Real Numbers
2
Vocabulary Additive Inverse-the opposite of a number Identity Property of Addition: – for any number, n, n + 0 = n – Any number plus zero is…? Inverse Property of Addition: – For every number, n, there is an additive inverse -n such that n + (-n) = 0 – Example: 5 + (-5) = 0
3
Adding Numbers with the SAME Sign To add two numbers with the same sign, add their absolute values. – The sum has the SAME sign as the numbers you added Examples: 2 + 6 = 8 (-2) + (-6) = -8
4
Adding Numbers with Different Signs To add numbers with different signs, find the difference of their absolute values – The sum has the same sign as the number with the HIGHEST absolute value Examples: -2 + 6 = 4 2 + (-6) = -4
5
Subtracting Real Numbers To subtract a number, ADD its OPPOSITE! – Examples: 1.5 - 2 5 + (-2) 3 2.3 – (-5) 3 + 5 8
