3. Story Sacks Story sacks are about making books fun and bringing stories to life! A Story sack is a cloth bag full of wonderful resources to encourage children and adults to enjoy reading together.

9. How is it taught? Whole class Small groups Regular – daily – sessions What happens in a session? - practise individual sounds - build and blend words - write the words we read

10. We want the children to learn that letters are symbols for sounds, so that when they see the letters, they say and hear /m/ /a/ /t/ 'mat'. Sounds need to be said very precisely. For example, when we see the letter, we say /m/ and not 'muh'. Watch out for,,,,

11. Over the following weeks, we will be introducing these sounds in the following order: Unit 1: a, i, m, s, t Unit 2: n, o, p Unit 3: b, c, g, h Unit 4: d, f, v, e Unit 5: k, l, r, u Unit 6: j, w, z Unit 7: x, y, ff, ll, ss and zz

12. What can I do? Check which sounds we are working on Be precise in the way you say the sounds Always use the sound not the letter name to identify the symbol Share activities with your child Be positive!

13. This is how we teach reading in Oak class! Children will develop these skills at different rates and therefore will be ready to tackle scheme books at different stages. We will monitor the children closely and once we feel they are ready to tackle the reading scheme books we will send them home in the book bags!
