Warm-Up What is the difference between a witch-hunt and witch-trials? Essential Questions: 1.How do we prepare for the American Literature Required Research Project? 2.What does it mean to be a Critical Researcher? 3.How does a researcher select relevant and credible sources? 4.How do researchers find quality source material and document it properly? 5.How do researchers develop sound thesis statements? 6.How do researchers avoid plagiarism in their writing? 14 The Research Paper Warm-Up Citations and Sources Computer Lab

Warm-Up Can the Internet always be trusted? What do you think makes a source credible or trustworthy? What makes a source questionable or inaccurate? Essential Questions: 1.How do we prepare for the American Literature Required Research Project? 2.What does it mean to be a Critical Researcher? 3.How does a researcher select relevant and credible sources? 4.How do researchers find quality source material and document it properly? 5.How do researchers develop sound thesis statements? 6.How do researchers avoid plagiarism in their writing? Enduring Understanding: Writing is a process!

Research Paper Prompt Our studies of The Crucible and McCarthyism have highlighted the fact that both Puritan times and the 1950’s were periods of American history that were characterized by persecution and prejudice. Arthur Miller's The Crucible, in the context of the historical Salem Witch Trials, shows many innocent people being accused of crimes/sins they did not commit. Throughout history, society has been blinded to similar occurrences, or "witch hunts." Indeed, Miller wrote The Crucible in response to one of those "witch hunts" that took place in his time period--McCarthyism.

Research the background of the Salem Witch Trials, McCarthyism, and other "witch hunts" throughout history to find their causes, evaluate their consequences, and develop a solution that would help avoid and/or prevent such "witch hunts" in the future. You will take your research results and utilize them in order to write a 5-7 page research paper. Your Assignment

The Format Introduction – Discuss Salem in 1692 and McCarthyism in the 1950s. Use The Crucible by Arthur Miller as well as other sources that you select from your research. Transition – Discuss the ways in which “witch hunting” continued into the 20 th century. Research modern examples of “witch hunts.” Body – Select one example of a “witch hunt” and elaborate on it in detail. Utilize three or more outside sources in order to support your ideas. Conclusion – Summarize what you have learned from this research process. Evaluate the consequences of the “witch hunts” and develop a solution that might help avoid and/or prevent such “witch hunts” in the future. APA Citations!

Research Paper Materials It is crucial to organize your research materials (a suggestion is to keep all materials in the Handouts section of your notebook).

What is a “witch hunt” anyway? If you do a simple google.com search, this is what you get: 1.Thoughts on credibility? 2.Do google searches produce good results? 3.How can I find better results?

Search Engines What is a search engine? A search engine is a service that utilizes a computer program to search the Internet and identify items that match the characters and keywords entered by a user. Why use a search engine? Search engines are useful for finding information on organizations, groups, and personal web pages related to a topic. It is especially important to be wary when using Internet sources, as there is are no quality control mechanisms that verify the legitimacy of information on individual web pages. What are some examples of a search engine? Examples of search engines include Google and Yahoo.GoogleYahoo.

UDLibSearch What is a database? Databases are usually collections of journal and magazine articles, dissertations, reviews, and abstracts. Why use a database? Using a database allows users to search for information in an organized collection. The user benefits from this organization because it provides more relevant results, through the use of subject headings and descriptors. Users can also search for keywords in specific fields, such as author and title, and limit their results using various criteria. Databases also provide information in known sources, for example, printed magazines and journals. The content of databases has undergone a review process and the information is more reliable than information found on the Internet. Often databases provide access to full-text magazine and journal articles.

Computer Lab Time! Based on the topic I chose for you, search for information that will help support your research paper topic. At the computer lab, you should: Use UD Lib Search to locate articles Choose at least 6 sources on your research topic Look for opposing articles to enhance your own ideas Begin differentiating necessary information from excess information

Your Research Articles Take out and annotate the articles you printed from the computer lab. This means highlighting and/or underlining any important quotes, writing notes in the margins, and differentiating between important information from useless information.

Research Topic Groups Here are your assigned research topic groups:

Group Work! Find and sit with your research topic group members. Using your annotated citations, discuss with your group members the important ideas you came across and how you believe these ideas apply to your research topic. Take notes about your discussion ideas and how you want to utilize them in your research paper.

Annotated Bibliography Graphic Organizers Go back to your seats and individually fill out your annotated bibliography graphic organizer using the sources your group members have located.

Remember: The Annotation  Summarize the main ideas of the source you are using.  Evaluate the authority or background of the author  Is this author credible?  Comment on the intended audience  Compare/Contrast this source with another you have cited  Explain how this source enhances your bibliography
