In 1996, I joined Cadus Pharmaceutical Company and established methods identifying ligands to orphan G protein-coupled receptors. I re-joined Lilly Discovery Endocrine Research as a principal investigator in 1998. During my tenure I have established numerous drug discovery programs within obesity, diabetes, and psychiatry. I have expertise in neuropeptide receptor systems, and in convergent neural mechanisms regulating metabolic state, addiction and mood.

Lilly Diabetes Company Confidential Copyright© 2008 Eli Lilly and Company Company Confidential Copyright© 2008 Eli Lilly and Company Job Responsibilities My job responsibilities as a principal investigator in Discovery Research include: 1) Overseeing research laboratory activities including supervision of associate scientists (typically Master’s degree holding) 2) Exploratory research aimed at identification and validation of new targets for drug discovery 3) Developing and leading viable drug discovery programs including management of large multidisciplinary teams 4) Establishing and participating in external research collaborations 5) Publishing research findings (manuscripts, conferences, FDA study reports, patents) 6) Interacting with regulatory agencies (FDA) 7) Mentoring associate scientists and junior principal investigators.

I have spent my entire post graduate career in industry. My passion is research and I see my future career continuing to run a lab and drug discovery teams. Transitioning into an administrative/management role is an available career path, but it is not a personal goal.

Lilly Diabetes Company Confidential Copyright© 2008 Eli Lilly and Company Company Confidential Copyright© 2008 Eli Lilly and Company Essential Skills Required 1) Hypothesis generation, experimental design and data interpretation 2) Communication skills (written and verbal) 3) Effective teamwork and working in large multidisciplinary teams 4) Must be highly effective, productive and motivated toward drug discovery 5) Flexible to change projects and research focus based on business needs (projects get cancelled all the time, sometimes for nonscientific reasons, and one must be willing to move on to more productive projects) 6) Excellent research skills and demonstrated publication record is required 7) Postdoctoral training in pharmaceutical industry can be advantageous but is not required

Associate scientists require a minimum of a BS or BA (Master’s degree preferred) and several years of lab- based research experience (critical for securing an industry job at this level).
