Component 1 NUR1101 – Introduction to Professional Nursing First Year General orientation to the library Book searching in online catalog Scholarly journals vs. magazines CINAHL searching, locating full text RefWorks Formerly consisting of 3 components:
4
Intensive research for term papers Important critical component – evaluation and selection of articles “Search Clinic” – Students start researching on their own, then come in small groups to mandatory search clinic to work with librarian and course instructor on refining their search. Component 2 NUR 3312 – Nursing Care of Adults – Juniors
5
Assessment of a community’s public health strengths and weaknesses Finding health statistics at national, state, municipal and community levels Proposal for a health promotion strategy – needs to be supported with evidence from the literature. Students need to search CINAHL and PubMed Component 3 NUR 4102 – Nursing and Health Promotion - Seniors
7
Create a RefWorks account Choose a topic pertinent to a care plan Search CINAHL – using recommended limits Search PubMed – using recommended limits Read abstracts to choose 5 most pertinent articles from each database Export citations to RefWorks Create a bibliography in APA 6 th style
8
Piloted to students as extra credit assignment, fall 2009 Mandatory for all students, fall 2010
9
After completing this information literacy instruction component students will be able to 1.Formulate a research question and identify appropriate keywords for searching. 2.Effectively search CINAHL and PubMed. 3.Evaluate and select the best articles for an assignment by reading abstracts included in database results. 4. Create a bibliography correctly formatted according to APA 6 th style.

CINAHL search - 1,2, or 3 points PubMed Search 1,2, or 3 points Bibliography 2,3,or 4 points TOTAL POSSIBLE: 10 points pertinent, effective keywords - 1 pertinent, effective keywords - 1 Quality of articles selected - 2 Accuracy of techniques, such as truncation; use of related terms, synonyms - 1 Accuracy of techniques, esp. truncation; use of related terms, synonyms - 1 All elements present in citations in correct APA 6 th style - 2 or 1 Use of limit functions, evidence of revision (if necessary) - 1 Each student received score and individualized hints for improvement from librarian via email. Some students were asked to submit revised work before a score could be given.
18
Few students actually read and followed the instructions Did not limit to Core Nursing subset in CINAHL Did not limit to nursing subset in PubMed Limited to full text (eliminates 360 links library subscriptions) Chose first 5 articles off the top of results list – did not read abstracts and select best articles
19
There was a connection glitch that made some students connect to Business Source Premier instead of CINAHL – Students didn’t even notice!
20
Pluses Introduces students to PubMed. Opportunity to do a search on a topic and receive feedback Introduction to RefWorks Received buy-in from course faculty. Course coordinator stated that bibliographies submitted during pilot semester and current semester were much better than in previous semesters The occasional “thank you” from students Minuses Success of student experience depends on following instructions Students do not actually have to read all 10 articles, so there is no real incentive to choose the best citations Substantial time investment for instructing librarian.
21
Make in-class presentation much more systematic, have students type along with me when I’m showing examples. Try to find a way to push instructions more effectively. (I’m open to suggestions….)
