3 Long words are often easier to understand than short words because they are built from parts which you already know.

6 Telecommunications has three parts … tele communicate tions prefix root suffix

7 Word analysis is …  Dividing a word into familiar parts Why do it?  To learn the meaning of unfamiliar words

8 Try analyzing these words  Redirect  Unable  Disability  Underweight

9 Look at these words  Preschool  Premature  Pre-reading  Predict “Pre-” is a prefix. What does pre mean? before

10 “Pre-” is a prefix  A prefix is a syllable added to the beginning of a word which changes its meaning.

11 “Re-” is another prefix rewind retell replay review “re-” means again or anew or back

12 Here is another familiar prefix unhappy unable unfortunate “un-” means not

13 There are several prefixes which change a root’s meaning to the opposite…  Un-  In-  Ir-  Il-  Im-  Unexpected  Insecure  Irrelevant  Illegal  Impossible

14 Do exercises 1.1 and 1.2 now.
