SOLVING ONE-STEP EQUATIONS Integrated Math I Objective: Solve one-step linear equations in one variable with strategies involving inverse operations and integers

DEFINITIONS Term : a number, variable or the product or quotient of a number and a variable.

Terms are separated by addition (+) or subtraction (-) signs. 3a – 2/5b + 7x – 4z + 52 How many Terms do you see? 5

HOW MANY TERMS DO YOU SEE? 2 terms 4 terms 3 terms 1 term

DEFINITIONS Constant: a term that is a number without a variable. Coefficient: the number value in front of a variable in a term.

3x – 6y + 18 = 0 What are your coefficients? What is your constant? 3, -6 18

WHAT IS YOUR COEFFICIENT, WHAT IS YOUR CONSTANT? 7x – 8y – 12 = 0 Coefficient Constant 7 and -8 -12

SOLVING ONE-STEP EQUATIONS: A one-step equation means you only have to perform one mathematical operation to solve it. You can add, subtract, multiply or divide to solve a one-step equation.

Solving an addition equation : t + 7 = 21 -Draw a line down the equal sign to separate the equation into two parts. -Get rid of the 7 by doing the opposite operation to both sides of the equation. t + 7 = 21 -7 t = 14 Example 1

Solving a subtraction equation : g – 6 = 40 Get rid of the 6 by doing its opposite operation to both sides of the equation. g – 6 = 40 +6 g = 46 Example 2

Solving a multiplication equation : 8n = 32 Get rid of the 8 by dividing both sides of the equation by 8. Here we “undo” multiplication by doing the opposite – division. 8n = 32 88 n = 4 Example 3

Solving a division equation : k / 9 = 11 Get rid of the 9 by using the opposite operation which is multiplication. k / 9 = 11 x 9 k = 99 Example 4
