What is Greek Tragedy? Form of drama that show the downfall of a dignified, superior character who participates in events of great significance definition Protagonist is neither good nor bad but is flawed. Often depicts humans’ relationships to the gods and shows serious subjects (duty, suffering, and fate). subjects Designed to arouse fear and pity in viewers as hero faces doom that could happen to anyone. purpose

Catastrophe *Must have major implications beyond the tragic hero. Ex. death of a grand parent vs. death of general on eve of war’s end. Tragedies end with disastrous conclusion ending Usually involves multiple deaths If tragic hero does not die He/she suffers complete ruin

Role of Fate DESTINY Gods preordained a person’s fate IS Impossible to escape one’s fate no matter what actions he/she takes UNAVOIDABLE If you try to escape fate, you hurry more directly toward it.
