Chapter 10 Freshwater Biomes 10.1 Aquatic Biomes Many of Earth’s organisms live in aquatic (H 2 0) habitats. 2 Factors for determining Aquatic Biomes are the Amount of dissolved salts in the H 2 0. Depth of H 2 0 2 Groups of Aquatic Biomes: Saltwater---Oceans Freshwater----Lakes, Ponds, and Rivers Bodies of H 2 0 can be divided into 3 depth zones: Photic zone Aphotic zone Benthic zone

10.2 Standing-Water Ecosystems Freshwater biomes are divided into two groups: Standing-water ecosystems—swamps, marshes, and bogs Flowing-water ecosystems—rivers, streams, crooks, and brooks 2 Types of Plankton Phytoplankton—carry out photosynthesis Zooplankton—do not carry out photosynthesis

10.3 Flowing-Water Ecosystems Flowing freshwater: rivers, streams, creeks, brooks all refer to water that flows over land. Stream Organisms Organisms must adapt to the rate of the water’s movement. Salmon and related fish breed and grow in freshwater streams but spend their adult lives in the oceans. Stream Flow Gravity causes streams to flow downhill.
