NOS DataExplorer Enterprise GIS Efforts within NOAA's Ocean Service Jason Marshall (PSGS) NOAA Coastal Services Center
2
NOAA Ocean Service Enterprise GIS for NOAA’s Ocean Service NOAA’s Ocean Service Data Distribution Variety of coastal and ocean data created by Ocean Service Many web sites and a variety of data delivery approaches
3
NOAA Ocean Service Enterprise GIS for NOAA’s Ocean Service Observations of NOS Sites… Users must navigate multiple sites to find data – 13 different sites for the primary NOS datasets Variety of mechanisms for just ‘getting the data’ – FTP/HTTP, various IMS, off-the-shelf & custom tools, etc… Multiple data viewer types and styles – ArcIMS, MapObjects, Minn. MapServer and others… No interface for previewing data coverage of NOS data holdings from all Program Offices at once Sheer number of discovery and delivery mechanisms makes data accessibility difficult and time consuming – limiting overall user base and satisfaction
4
NOAA Ocean Service Enterprise GIS for NOAA’s Ocean Service The idea… Goal – Develop a single point of entry for GIS data discovery and delivery Objective – Increase the diversity and number of uses and users of our spatial data holdings Requirements – Data remains distributed with originator – Standards-based approach: FGDC Metadata and open standards and protocols (OGC, W3C)

NOAA Ocean Service Enterprise GIS for NOAA’s Ocean Service Enterprise GIS Framework Tools Commercial Off-the-Shelf Software – ESRI ArcIMS 4.0.1 - Map image and data stream construction Out-of-the-box ArcIMS template, customized for look-n-feel Out-of-the-box ArcIMS Metadata Explorer – ESRI ArcSDE – Spatial reference inventory Local footprint outlines of the remote data Always searchable, even when remote servers down – Microsoft SQL Server Request registry and remote data source connectivity knowledge – Microsoft IIS ServletExec – JavaVM ISAPI container – Java 2 (Enterprise Edition): JSP/JSTL/JDBC – Web-UI construction, system flow control, error handling and data source connectivity

NOAA Ocean Service Enterprise GIS for NOAA’s Ocean Service Networking considerations NOS CIO’s office aided in the development of a multi- tier architecture to support the NOS DataExplorer Leveraged existing resources provided by the NOS CIO’s office: – Secure Public Information Network (SPIN) Provides a single tier of security between the system and the public as well as between the system and internal resources. 24x7 managed server-tier for DataExplorer – Server load balancing and cluster management support – Database Administration support – System-level utility development – On-demand server-side troubleshooting/support

NOAA Ocean Service Enterprise GIS for NOAA’s Ocean Service Download Process Request processing job fires every few hours Iteration through pending requests Individual layers in the request bundle extracted by extent and/or feature-by-feature Downloads inventory/footprint and all remote data for each feature in the user defined extent Downloads the FGDC Metadata for inventory/footprint as well as for each feature (if supported by data provider) Packages (zips) up the files & moves to the FTP site Notifies the user to come collect their package

NOAA Ocean Service Enterprise GIS for NOAA’s Ocean Service NOS DataExplorer Single point of data discovery and delivery while maintaining distributed data Utilizing open standards: OGC WMS, ESRI ArcXML, W3C XML & HTTP, ISO TCP/IP… Integrated NOS data coverage visualization on-the-fly over the web Compatible with both ESRI as well as OGC- compliant products client tools 24x7 availability – Support provided by the NOS CIO
11
NOAA Ocean Service Enterprise GIS for NOAA’s Ocean Service What’s next for NOS DataExplorer? Integrated with GeoSpatial One-Stop (GOS) – NOS Data holdings channel for GeoSpatial One-Stop International Ocean Observing System (IOOS) – Providing base-map layers for over-rendering of observational data – Integration of observations data sources as viewable/downloadable datasets for DataExplorer users Gulf of Maine, Ocean Observing System (GoMOOS) – NOS Data Explorer will participate as a data provider, using WMS map services, to provide a base data for the Gulf of Maine Framework Data Project.
