Main lines of the study Situation : aging of parents and migration of adult children Problem : transnational families, who cares for the elderly ‘left-behind’ in India ? Hypothesis : reduction of ‘capital of care’ for the aging parents Modification in the chain of care and solidarity a) private space : family b) public, organized c) dealer network : paying services

Theoritical background Basic concept - definitions Capital of care : * component of social capital, anglo- saxon sense of the term (Ref. Putnam & Coleman) Transnational Families : * spatial separation : members spread across nation states * care : sense of collective welfare and unity (Bryceson & Vorela, 2002) * composition : living arrangements, ‘families nodes’ (Zontini, 2007)
