3 Defining Mentoring Mentoring is an enabling relationship between an experienced person (mentor) and a less experienced person (mentee). Mentee/Protégé The relationship between the mentor and mentee should be build as a mutually beneficial partnership that allows for empowerment and self-determination in a climate which transcends age, race, disabilities, ethnicity, gender, and generation.

4 MENTORING FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Strategies for Managing Challenges in the Workplace Function of Mentoring Mentoring is more than a role, it is a function centered on... 1. Influencing – acknowledging personal responsibility. 2. Informing – self-disclosure; sharing understandings. 3. Probing – Asking “Why?” What? How? and When? 4. Expanding contacts – directing to other resources. 5. Summarizing – bring closure on the next step (s).

Mentoring – nurturing, supporting, advocating. 3. Tutoring - “how-to strategies. 4. Confronting – feedback oriented to adjustment and change.

6 MENTORING FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Strategies for Managing Challenges in the Workplace Utilizing Mentoring to Handle Challenges When addressing workplace challenges, effective mentoring practices serve two primary purposes... 1. responding to mentee's needs: a. providing candid and factual feedback; and b. identifying information to decode issue. 2. helping mentee identify and implement a response: a. what can and should be changed, and b. strategies for implement the change.

7 MENTORING FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Strategies for Managing Challenges in the Workplace Mentoring Others on Managing Change in the Workplace Mentoring others to manage change in the workplace tends to fall into two categories that differentiate... 1. present status - “what is”; often center on deficiencies. 2. possibilities - “what is desired”; actions for stepping up.

Clarifies the issue. 2. Establishes goals to respond to the issue. 3. Develops prioritized tasks for actualizing goals. 4. Formulates actions to implement tasks. 5. Establishes measures to monitor progress and assess results.
