Evolution of LGBT Mentorship Programs UCLA- Patricia Alfred-Keating, Ph.D. Psychological Services Center The University of Southern California (USC) patterned program from Dr. Alfred-Keating The University of California, Davis consulted with Dr. Alfred Keating and created new program Penn State University

5. GOALS Provide safe environment for development of a positive Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, or Transgender Identity Break isolation and connect with a mentor to build greater self-acceptance Combat internalized homophobia, correct myths and stereotypes, and provide more accurate information Get connected to LGBTA community

Target Populations To Be Served By The Program Those in the earlier stages of self-identification Those not yet prepared of willing to participate in public activities suggesting a particular sexual or gender identity status Those in need of support and connection, but not necessarily in need of psychotherapy or counseling Those not interested in large discussion groups Those with greater need for privacy/confidentiality

A Mentee May: Be unsure of their orientation or identity Not yet be ready for others to know Have some struggle with being LGBT Fear the loss of family and/or friends Not yet know how to meet others Not know the norms of dating Feel isolated from others Worry about their future Seek role-modeling
