EXPANSIONISTS: Americans who favored territorial growth; began to want New Mexico, Texas, and California MANIFEST DESTINY: US was DESTINED to own most or all of North America -- It became the rallying cry for most Americans! --Only white men would receive the benefits from MANIFEST DESTINY --Slave holders hoped to expand westward, too!!

THE JOURNEY WESTWARD Between 1840-1860: 260,000 Americans crossed the continent to settle on the West Coast. Many were farmers in the Midwest The Great Plains was avoided; thought of as a ‘wasteland’

THE MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR Scavenger hunt: Here are the rules: 1.You need to bring a picture of a map that includes all the territories of Mexico in 1846 (you can print, take a picture, etc.) 2.A picture and translation of the ‘border’ James K. SETTLERS FLOCK TO CALIFORNIA 1848: Workers around a sawmill found flecks of gold in the American River (east of Sacramento) 1849: 80,000 Americans were headed to CA “California Gold Rush”---’49ers!!!! 1847: Population of CA: 14,000; by 1852: 225,000!!!!! Immigrants, especially from the EAST, were immigrating to CA
