E safety in School – How are your year doing? Year 7 Year 8 Year 9Year 10

E safety at home – do you “get it”? We know… Students at HCC are not being as careful at home Students at HCC are arranging to meet up with people that they have only ever talked to on Facebook Students security settings on social networks are not always set at the proper level Students at HCC are sending explicit images of themselves to people via their phone Students at HCC are sharing explicit images of themselves online We know this because you have told us! We know this because your parents have told us!

So what’s the difference? There is no difference The internet at school is exactly the same as the internet at home – The only difference Is that Mr Borland, Mrs Findlay and Mrs Wright can’t protect you! So you have to protect yourselves!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! “But I don’t need to protect myself”

So I should avoid the internet altogether… OF COURSE NOT!!! The world is full of millions of wonderful people and so is the internet But just like the real world…the internet has some horrible people too So what should I do?

Here are some suggestions: always use imaginative passwords only ‘friend’ those that you know be aware of how to spot spam or phishing emails/posts. Keep personal details private Post creative content or something about your interests. Make videos creative and interesting, not ‘provocative’ Avoid countless ‘selfies’!

Playing your part – being responsible! Always act responsibly when you are using technology. Here are some suggestions: if you haven’t got anything nice to say, then don’t say anything only post content that you would be happy to read yourself! avoid ‘trolling’ people engage in online discussions in a positive manner and constructively. Be aware of copyright. Always ask for permission from the owner or use other ‘free-to-use’ content Always have a healthy suspicion of content that you read on the web.

Playing your part – being responsible! Be careful of getting involved in Internet crazes Do something for a good cause organised by a well known charity.

Write a blog about a hobby Learn about life on the International Space Station by following NASA on social media Find out more about an interest on video steaming sites

The App has been developed by Sussex and The Metropolitan police. Young people can upload information and share with a 3rd party before reporting to the police if needed. Recommended as a good way of getting young people to evidence their concerns There are other people here to help you

It really is very simple If you wouldn’t do it at school…should you do it at home? Remember that every single thing that you do any time, anywhere is monitored by someone There is no problem too big or too small that you cannot come and tell us about Once you put something online you have lost control

Mrs Findlay – Terrorism, Prevent, Extremism and the Internet What is extremism? What are the signs? What should I do?

Miss Wright….Child Sexual Exploitation

What the children’s charity Bernado’s say…

Think about all your different relationships. They could be with close friends, a boyfriend or girlfriend – and maybe groups of friends from school or the area you live in. As we grow up, we develop relationships with lots of different people. It’s how we learn to enjoy healthy relationships, and that’s a great skill to have.

Think about all your different relationships. But things can go wrong along the way, and people might try to take advantage of you, forcing you into dangerous situations before you know it. That’s why you need to be aware of warning signs that someone may want to exploit you – and to be very careful who you trust.

Sexual exploitation – how much do you know? Sexual exploitation can be hard to recognise because you often believe you’re in a good relationship with the person – or people – who want to abuse your trust in them. It could be a friend, or group of friends. It could be someone you think of as a boyfriend or girlfriend. It could be a person or a new group of people you’ve only just got to know.

Sexual exploitation – how much do you know? It could be someone you’ve talked to online. But whoever it is, they could use clever ways to take advantage of your relationship – and that means you can be harmed almost before you know what’s going on. For example, someone might give you money, drugs, alcohol, gifts or somewhere to stay and then force you to do one or more of these things in return: Have sex with them Do something sexual to them Be touched inappropriately, in a way that makes you feel uncomfortable Look at sexual images – including films or pictures Watch them do something sexual, including having sex or touching themselves sexually. That’s why it’s so important to look out for the warning signs that someone’s behaviour towards you may not be all it seems.

Who can you trust? It’s not always easy to tell. Sexual exploitation can happen to you, no matter what your gender, age or background – so you need to be careful who you trust. And that means looking out for warning signs that someone might want to take advantage of you, whether you’ve recently met them or they belong to an existing group of friends. One warning sign is when someone tries to get to know you better by giving you lots of attention and making you feel really special. They might buy you gifts or involve you in activities that seem exciting or fun.

Who can you trust? It becomes a problem if that person starts to try ways of controlling you, such as making promises they can’t keep, threatening you, or even becoming violent if you don’t do what they want. They might also try and isolate you from your friends, family and other people who care for you. When that happens, it’s easier for an abuser to put you in dangerous situations or force you to do things you don’t want to do – with them or other people they know. That’s not doing you a favour – that’s exploitation. Sadly, individuals who have fewer people looking out for them are even more vulnerable to sexual exploitation.

Thank you for listening
