5 CBT CBT is simple practical exercises that help change a persons way of thinking and dealing with problems.

6 CBT - ABC The ABC Model is the main CBT tool we work with at Hope Rehab ABC is simple and very useful ABC helps Addicts rewire their brains

7 ABC ABC is a written assignment similar to school work but the subject is the client The counsellor or the client can do the writing The goal is to teach the client to do ABC in their heads

8 What do the letters ABC mean?

9 ABC…D & E A = Activating event B = Beliefs C = Consequence D = Dispute E = Effective way forward

11 ABC changes negative thinking In 12 step NA & AA they call negative thinking Stinking Thinking

12 A = Activating Event An Activating event is a Trigger E.g. Loose job!

13 B = Beliefs Beliefs is Self-talk, another way to describe E.g. Thinking “I cant cope”

14 C = Consequences Consequences are in 2 parts 1.Feelings 2.Behavior >>>>> Fear leads to cravings leads to drinking >>>>>>

15 D = Disputes Is for Disputing negative thoughts Rationalizing the thoughts How helpful are they?

16 E = Effective way forward Effective way forward is Positive Self-talk & Changing Behavior

25 ABC The best way to learn this tool is to try it on yourself Then try it on a colleague Helpful tips Many of us get angry while driving or with our teenage children or at work?????

26 ABC – Exercise I want you to think of a Trigger now When did you last get angry or frustrated? Or scared? Why? What happened? Everyone gets scared and angry sometimes, its normal – you maybe scared or frustrated now?

27 ABC – Exercise Take 5 minutes to select an A example Now write down your feelings about A in C Now write some of your thoughts about A in B

29 ABC – Exercise D – Try looking at the situation from another point of view. E – What would be a better thought or action?

30 ABC – Exercise Now lets try it on the person next to you 1.Ask them for a A trigger 2.How they felt about it in C 3.In B write down their self talk or thoughts 4.Any behaviour in C
