A. Background Born in New York In 1881 elected to the state legislature He was athletic and had a reputation for being tough. He fought to improve slum conditions in New York City. He quit when his mother and his wife died on the same day

B. A Hero is born In the 1890’s the US went to war with Spain (The Spanish American War). Roosevelt enlisted in the Army and formed his own troop called the Rough Riders.

After the war he returned to New York and was elected Governor. He worked to eliminate corruption in NY government, angering many NY politicians. State politicians had him nominated for Vice-President of the US in an attempt to get rid of him.

In 1901 President McKinley was assassinated in Buffalo, so Roosevelt became President of the United States.

C. The Progressive Roosevelt 1.He wanted to change America so he saw his presidency as a Bully Pulpit – which means people would have to listen to him.

2.He went after big business and the trusts first. In 1890 Congress passed the Sherman Anti-Trust Act.

This act (law) made monopolies and pools illegal. Roosevelt brought 44 companies to court to stop their illegal acts. Roosevelt became known as a Trustbuster. 3.Roosevelt also respected the rights of workers. In 1902 he settled a coal strike by threatening to send in the US Army to mine coal.

4.Roosevelt promised every American a Square Deal – which meant everyone would have an equal opportunity for success. To help, he supported: Hepburn Act – lowered railroad rates. Pure Food and Drug Act- Forced companies to use only pure materials in food and medicine, and list ingredients on packaging.

National Parks- Roosevelt created National Parks to preserve forests, and protect them from pollution and the lumber industry.
