Where we were, Where we are, Where we are going Reading Champions - 21 May 2014

Before we start... WiT is NOT just about numbers in boxes In late 2009 schools, the council and the unions said: “We will do whatever it takes to get every child in Leicester reading” The first briefing for local councillors about WiT said it “...must not be seen as a quick fix or short-term attempt to boost National Curriculum test results” That being said, those who judge us use the numbers in boxes!

So where were we? Level 2 or above in reading at Key Stage 1 - 2009 TopBottom All local authorities in England

And where we are now Level 2 or above in reading at Key Stage 1 – 2013 TopBottom All local authorities in England

So where were we? Level 4 or above in reading at Key Stage 2 - 2010 TopBottom All local authorities in England

And where we are now Level 4 or above in reading at Key Stage 2 - 2013 TopBottom All local authorities in England

What does it mean? This year the equivalent of 400 more Leicester children entered Key Stage 2 reading securely compared to 2009 Last year it was equivalent of over 270 children The equivalent of 175 more Leicester children started secondary school reading at Level 5 compared to 2010 Secondary schools report that half as many children enter Year 7 with a low reading age than did three years ago

And is that any good? From 2010 to now, Leicester’s improvement in Level 4+ reading at Key Stage 2 is the best in the country Last year’s Key Stage 2 gains were top 10 in the country, most local authorities declined Gains in the last two years at Level 2B+ reading at Key Stage 1 are in the top 25 nationally

Where are we going? If we kept doing what we’ve been doing at Key Stage 1

Where are we going? If we kept doing what we’ve been doing at Key Stage 2

Improvement is not linear Is doing what we’ve done so far going to continue to work? Is there anything we need to do more of or anything we need to do less of? Are the needs of the children the same? Especially in Key Stage 2 were significantly more are starting where they are ‘supposed’ to start

Speed dating What have you done in your school projects that has had an impact? Where is your focus now for next year’s project?
