3 Oral Presentation Presentation = 100 points Log Totals = 50 points Total Score Possible = 150 points Presentations will last 5 minutes  you will be penalized for falling short or going over (10 second window) This means you need to practice your presentation several times before you perform in front of the class! 6/25/2016 3

4 Part I: The Power Point Think carefully about the book’s plot and setting, characters, symbolism, theme, and memorable quotes You will make an 8 minimum slide Power Point (including cover slide) that introduces your book to the class and covers each of the above topics. You must also incorporate pictures that either literally or symbolically represent some aspect of your book. **When you present, you must bring a copy of your printed Power Point (worth points) 6/25/2016 4

5 Part II: The Presentation This is the area where I will be the most critical. As a student, you are responsible for developing and displaying high standards of reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Here is where you will practice the speaking skills requirements. I will be looking for the following criteria during your presentations: Presentation: a clear beginning, middle and end to plot summary Speaking style: voice is projected for entire class and language flows at a natural pace. Speaker keeps words like “um” and “like” to a minimum. Formal language is used. Professionalism: body language and behavior in audience and during presentation are professional Eye contact: eye contact is made with the entire class for 90% of the presentation Timeliness: Speaker made good use of time; presentation was 5 minutes long 6/25/2016 5

6 How to Fill the 5 Minute Time Requirement Get to class early and have your flash-drive/ Tell the class your name, book title and author→ display your cover slide ---- Slide 1 Cover slide → Title of book and author, genre, date of presentation, and your name 6/25/2016 6

7 Slide 2 Plot Plot→ Give a brief synopsis of the plot by dividing this information into the following categories: *exposition (characters, conflict, setting) *rising action (3 events) *climax (most intense scene) *falling action (events leading to resolution) *resolution (all loose ends are tied together) 6/25/2016 7

8 Slide 3 Setting Why is the setting significant? Consider when and where the story takes place. Discuss the importance of three different settings in the story. (Think conflict, character development, symbolism) You may choose to use pictures 6/25/2016 8

9 Slide 4 Characters Characters. Who are the characters in the book? Terms to include: Protagonist, Antagonist, Dynamic, Deuteragonist, Flat, Round, etc, and your favorite character. **Don’t forget pictures 6/25/2016 9

10 Slide 5 Symbols Symbols-Person, place, thing or event that stands for itself and something beyond itself. Pick 4 symbols that represent something in the book. Include 4 picturessymbols and make sure you explain the symbolism to the class and why they mean what they do. 6/25/2016 10

11 Slide 6 Memorable Quotes Choose three memorable quotes and explain the significance behind each quote (analyze the importance of what they are saying). Explain who the speaker is and why you chose the quote 6/25/2016 11

12 Slide 7 Theme Slide 7 → Theme: the main idea/ lesson the author wants to convey. For this last slide, you will need to write what you think the theme of the book is. **Make sure to include a picture Ex: In the short story, “The Interlopers” readers learn that the men are capable of friendship only after they end their petty feud. 6/25/2016 12

14 Presentation Sign-Ups You will sign up for a presentation slot later this month. Be here the day of the assignment. Computer lab time is the 21 st and 22 nd (H9) Computer lab time is the 22 nd and 23 rd (CP9) Presentations begin on Wed and Thurs (23 rd and 24 th ) and continue the 4 th of April. I know many are scared to speak in front of the class, but learning to speak publicly is a state requirement, therefore this is a mandatory assignment. 6/25/2016 14
