Working the Land 1. Study the display, and label the objects 2. Use these objects to guess what jobs people did in the countryside? 3. Which objects would you not expect to see in the countryside today? Why not?

Working the Land What was life like in the countryside in the 19 th Century? Look at the farming display in the entrance, and at the pictures and writing on the green boards on the wall. 1. What jobs are people doing? Look carefully at the pictures and the tools. 2.What jobs did children do? 3. List four of the items made by the blacksmith. 4. How important was his job? Explain. 5. What were the wages like for farm workers? (Look at the 3 rd board along on the wall). Does it sound as though they were well paid? 6. Look at the big metal trap on the floor in the central display. What do you think it was for? 7. Why do you think the farm worker’s trousers (see model) are tied up with string? 8. How pleasant do you think life was in the countryside in the 19 th Century? How pleasant was life in the countryside? – session scheme 1.Introduction – the situation today5 minutes Whole group sitting - What is farming like today? - How do you make bread? i.e. from ploughing right through to bread - How do farmers reap, sow? i.e. what machines do they have? - What jobs are available in villages? - How pleasant is life in villages? 2. Activity – What was farming and village life like in Victorian Times?15 minutes In sub-groups of 2-3 Research, discuss and fill in activity cards. 3. Feedback – What they have found7-10 minutes Whole group sitting in their sub-groups Discuss in groups, and then feedback: - Was farming easier than nowadays? - How effective were the tools? - Were there more jobs available in the village? - How pleasant was life in the countryside?
