Speed and Velocity Chapter 9 Section 2
2
Speed: distance the object travels per unit of time Speed = Distance Time Example: 1. If a cyclist traveled 100 kilometers in 5 hours. What was his speed? 1. A snail moved 2 centimeters in 1 second. What was his speed?
3
1.A man decides to walk home from work. The man’s work is 15 miles away, and the man walks 4 miles/hour. How long does it take him to get home? 1.An ant has found food but he is 60 centimeters away from home. If the ant travels 3 centimeters/minute, how long will it take him to get home?
4
Average Speed Average speed (v) = total distance (d) total time (t) 1.A car travels 100 kilometers in 6 hours. What was the car’s average speed? 1.A cyclist travels 37 kilometers during the first 3 hours of the race. Then the cyclist travels 18 kilometers during the next hour. What was the average speed of the cyclist?
5
Velocity Velocity (v): speed in a given direction Changes in velocity happen when there is a change in speed, direction, or both speed and direction. Example: a hurricane is moving 25 km/h north 1.If I walk around the perimeter or the classroom would I be changing velocity? 2.When you play soccer is there ever a change in your velocity? 3.If a car drives north 60 kilometers at 65 miles/hour is there a change in velocity?
6
Graphing Speed The slope of a distance vs. time graph represents the speed Slope = Rise (vertical) Run (horizontal)
