SUSTAINABLE ANIMAL PRODUCTION The future of the farmers 2

Sustainable growth Position paper Sustainability criteria Strategic choices Roadmaps 3

…in a global perspective Global and national market Price Volatility in Agricultural Markets Different social expectations No more business as usual 4 Milk Barometer

… providing a future for farmers Decreasing number of farms, with increasing capacity Providing an acceptable income Training competent farmers Making farming more attractive 5

…investing in different production types More with less Intensive specialised production Less input per unit produced product Less impact on environment Less is more Slow-food movement Sufficient vs. efficient Cultural engagement 6

…for 300 million affluent consumers Critical and fickle. Look wider than personal health Involved in the whole story. Expect a quality product. The ecological sustainability story: the LATTE concept. 7

…with an active role in the environmental areas The countryside is redesigned Urbanisation creates new expectations and values The right to farm is under stress New ‘ecological’ farming systems 8

Need for animal protein “ Biological value and consequent net protein utilization of animal proteins is near-perfect but much lower for plant-based diets.” “World demand for animal protein (milk, eggs, meat) is expected to rise by 50% by 2020. This growing demand will come from hundreds of millions of poor households in emerging countries joining the middle classes.” 9

Antimicrobial Resistance 11

Antimicrobial Resistance Antimicrobial agents: –are essential to treat human and animal diseases; –should thus be considered as a public good. 12

WFO Livestock WG Antimicrobial Resistance Case-Study Set priorities of Livestock WG members; A zero measurement on global antimicrobial use and resistance and systems for prudent use; A draft chapter on antimicrobial use for the WFO policy to be adopted by the General Assembly in 2017; Draft guidelines on prudent use of antibiotics will be prepared in collaboration with FAO; 13

Priorities AMR is an increasingly serious threat to global public health that requires action across all government sectors and society. Prudent and responsible use of antimicrobials is required in both public and animal health management. Antimicrobial use in animals contributes to antimicrobial resistance in humans and vise versa. 14

Priorities Prudent and responsible use of antimicrobials in livestock production is necessary, independent from any public health issue. It is important that active antimicrobials remain available in the future for treating infections in animals. It is important that each country has a national strategy for reducing antimicrobial use and resistance in livestock production. 15

Priorities Political importance of AMR varies between regions Antimicrobials must remain available 16

Advocate prevention before cure Provide tools that reduce the need for curative treatment Give insight in cost- efficiency and economics Communication tools 17 Preventive Veterinary Medicine

Tools Biosecurity Hygiene practices Vaccines Surveillance schemes Prevention of exposure to risk factors The veterinarian should be able to explain to the farmers that prevention is better then cure 18

Animal Health Economics Belgian IBR control Article 9 status Cost efficiency of the programme is unclear Low motivation of the farmers community Belgian BVD control National eradication programme Cost-efficiency of BVD control is widely documented Farmers support the programme 19

Animal Health Economics Cost/benefits of health management options Farmers behaviour in making decisions under scarity of money Opportunity costs Marginale rule 20

Animal Health Economics 21

Conclusion No more business as usual Invest more in alternative animal disease management tools Focus on animal health economics 22
