5 Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley born in London, England 1797 Daughter of William Godwin, a noted social theorist, and Mary Wollstonecraft, one of the leading literary women of the day raised by her father and exposed throughout childhood to great intellectuals (literary, philosophical, scientific, etc) while growing up Met famous poet and controversial athiest Percy Bysshe Shelley in May 1814--they eloped to the Continent and married two years later after his wife’s death (1816)

6 Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley Switzerland-1816-the Shelleys and friends (i.e. Lord Byron, another famous and controversial poet) shared ghost stories these ghost stories inspired and eventually led to the writing of Frankenstein Frankenstein was first published in 1818, then edited and republished in 1831 Widowed in 1823 and never remarried devoted her life to raised her only surviving son and writing died in 1851

7 About Frankenstein the original text (1818) is in some ways significantly different than the 1831 text o “why,” you may ask? inspired by Romantic and Gothic elements set mainly in Switzerland, where Shelley first conceived the idea Percy Bysshe Shelley edited the original text and write an introduction to give it credibility o “why,” you may ask? o controversy: some say he actually wrote it

8 About Frankenstein Shelley may have been inspired by any or all of the following: o Romanticism o the Gothic o loss of her mother and loss of her newborn daughter o new findings and belief in science and logical thinking over religious/spiritual thinking

9 Prometheus and the Synopsis Prometheus was a character in Greek mythology credited with creating mankind from clay and defying the gods by giving man fire in order to create civilization. As a result, Prometheus was sentenced to eternal torment. Frankenstein is the story of Victor (or Viktor) Frankenstein, a man who discovers “the spark of life” and creates a grotesque monster to whom he gives the spark.
