Descriptive and Inferential Statistics Descriptive Statistics – consists of the collection, organization, and overall summery of the data presented. Inferential Statistics – generalizing from samples to population, making predictions of overall data based on sample. Population – the subjects that are being studied. Sample – is a small sample of the population that is being studied to make a prediction.

What is Data? Data is the values (measurements or observations) that the variables can assume. Variables that are determined by chance are called random variables. Data is used as a collective source of information for studies and research.

Purpose Is to analyze results of surveys and to be used as a tool in scientific research to make decisions based on controlled experiments. Other uses include operations research, quality control, estimation, and predictions.

Examples 15% of men in the U.S. are left-handed, 9% of women in the U.S. are left-handed. The average age of people who watch the tonight show is 48 Eating 10g of fiber everyday reduces the risk of heart attack by 14%.
