Religious Persecution Objective: To examine religious persecution and violence in Europe during the 1500's.

State of Christianity - ~1500 AD Until 1500, all Christians are "Catholics" o Some exceptions (i.e. Eastern Orthodox in Russia) ~1500 - Protestant Reformation o Martin Luther, John Calvin and others o Protestant Churches break away from Catholic church

Differences Between Catholic and Protestant Catholic Pope is head of the church Pope appoints Bishops to head the church in each country Pope interprets the Bible People don't read the Bible themselves Protestant Pope has no authority Each church has its own leaders o In England - the King o In Scotland, individual pastors People read the Bible and interpret it for themselves

Violence in Europe (1554) In this picture, two Mennonites (German Protestants) are executed in the German city of Ghent.

Violence in Europe - England (1588) In this picture, a Jesuit (a type of Catholic Priest) is being tortured and killed in England. He is being disemboweled - his intestines are being removed from his stomach. Hanging is the method of execution.

Violence in Europe - France (1560) In this picture, Huguenots (French Protestants) are being killed and tortured. Notice the babies in the background being held upside down by their legs.

Violence in Europe - Writing Assignment Using one of these images as a picture prompt, write a short story about religious persecution in Europe in the time period 1550- 1600.
