1 Weather and Climate Cause and effects of tropical revolving storms
Sequence of events leading to their formation The structure and characteristics of a hurricane

2 What are they? An area of intense low pressure formed in the tropics
Known as Hurricanes in the Atlantic, Typhoons in Japan / Philippines, Cyclones in SE Asia and Willy Willies in Australia!

3 11% 17% 33% 8% 20% 11% Tropical revolving storms occur all around the world, but are called different names.

4 Formation Hurricanes tend to form: Over warm tropical seas (+26.5 ºC)
In the summer and late autumn 5 – 15º north or south of the equator Where air is unstable and rising rapidly Hurricane Formation Video Q1. When and where do hurricanes tend to form? Q2. Read page 74 of the text book (paragraph 3 and 4) summarise this information into a flow chart to show the sequence of events that create a hurricane.

5 Warm Oceans The ‘food’ of a tropical storm is the warm moist water found near the equator. The air here is under LOW pressure, which means it can lift easily. This lifting encourages the air to cool and condense, as it does latent heat is released. This is the name given to energy produced when a substance changes state ie vapour to a liquid.

6 Here is a check list of what is needed for a tropical revolving storm to grow.
Once the storm has developed it can grow 400 miles wide. A storm can travel anywhere from 15 to 40mph

7 Structure of a hurricane
Q3. On a copy of this diagram add labels to show how the weather changes as a hurricane passes. Use diagram C on page 75 to help you.

8 Effects of hurricanes

9 Hurricanes can…. Damage and destroy homes with winds up to 125mph making people homeless Cause flooding because of the huge amounts of rainfall that is created Create storm surges which flood coastal areas and destroy hotels and businesses Kill and injure people and animals putting a huge strain on search and rescue and medical teams Destroy telephone lines and power cables Ruin the tourist industry for years as people are too afraid to visit after a major storm
