“THE STORY OF EXODUS” Exodus 07/11/2010 Dr. Dane Boyles

“THE STORY OF EXODUS” The Exodus was the beginning of the fulfillment of God’s covenant with Abraham. –The Exodus shaped Israel’s psyche. –The Exodus fashioned Israel’s memory.

“THE STORY OF EXODUS” –The Exodus became the pattern for Israel’s history from the time of the Judges through the monarchy. There are many parallels between Elijah and Moses. Elisha’s ministry continued to recall the memories of Moses and the Exodus.

“THE STORY OF EXODUS” –The Exodus also gave Israel hope for the future. 1 But now, this is what the LORD says—he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. (Isa. 43:1)

Isaiah 43:2 2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.

Isaiah 43:3 3 For I am the LORD, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior; I give Egypt for your ransom, Cush and Seba in your stead.

“THE STORY OF EXODUS” –Six basic life-issues in Exodus: Who are we? - identity 22 “Israel is My son, My firstborn” (Exod. 4:22). 11 “You are my beloved Son, with you I am well-pleased” (Mark 1:11).

“THE STORY OF EXODUS” 26 “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus” (Gal. 3:26). 6 “Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’” (Gal. 4:6).

“THE STORY OF EXODUS” What happened to us? - reality 1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2 in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. (Eph. 2:1-2)

“THE STORY OF EXODUS” What did God do to rescue us? - value 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! (2 Cor. 5:17).

“THE STORY OF EXODUS” Where are we going? - purpose 9 Moses and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and the seventy elders of Israel went up and saw the God of Israel. 10 Under his feet was something like a pavement made of sapphire, clear as the sky itself. (Exodus 24:9-10)

Exodus 24:11 11 But God did not raise his hand against these leaders of the Israelites; they saw God, and they ate and drank.

“THE STORY OF EXODUS” What is our function in the world? - fulfillment 4 ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. (Exodus 19:4)

Exodus 19:5 5 Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine,

Exodus 19:6 6 you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.”

1 Peter 2:9 9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

“THE STORY OF EXODUS” Why is there so much difficulty in the journey? - humility and dependence

Deuteronomy 8:2 2 Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the desert these forty years, to humble you and to test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.

Deuteronomy 8:3 3 He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.

Matthew 4:3-4 3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” 4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

“THE STORY OF EXODUS” –This is the story that gives us our true identity, reality, value, purpose, significance, and humility.
