(10 + b = 20) Ask another student: How do I solve this equation? (Subtract 10 on both sides of the equation.) Ask another student: What will be the final answer? (10)

6. Tyrone has saved $76.89 from his allowance and money he was given for his twelfth birthday. He is at the store and is trying to decide what he wants to purchase. He is willing to spend up to $60.00, but wants to save a little of his money. He knows he is going to buy the game “Tough Fighters,” which cost $34.99. He wants to choose something else. Write an equation Tyrone can use to help him determine how much his second item can cost. Then, use the price list to determine what Tyrone can purchase in addition to the game, “Tough Fighters” without exceeding $60.00.

8. Equation: $34.99 + x = $60.00 Tyrone could purchase the Handheld Football Computer Game that cost $23.77. That would make his total $58.76, which would be less than his $60.00 limit. If he purchased any of the other items, his total would exceed $60.00. You may solve this in different ways. One approach would be to solve for x and then identify the item that cost that much or less.

9. Madeline is preparing to plant a garden. She wants to have five rows of butter bean plants. She has seventy plants. Write an equation that will help Madeline determine how many plants to put in each of the five rows. Then solve the equation. Equation: 5b = 70 b = 14

10. Pedro’s family sold their house for $111,000. This amount is three times the amount they paid for the house ten years ago. Write an equation that can be used to determine the amount paid for the house ten years ago. Let y equal the original price of the house. Then solve the equation to find the original price. Equation: 3y = $111,000 y = $37,000

11. Sheryll and Lanie are responsible for providing snacks for the fifth grade at field day. There are 135 students in the fifth grade. Sheryll and Lanie have five hundred forty cookies. Write an equation the girls can use to determine how many cookies each fifth grader can have. Equation: 135c = 540 c = 4

12. The school store had 987 pencils in stock when school began. After the first week of school, there were 219 pencils left. Write an equation to show how many pencils were sold during the first week of school. Then solve it. Equation: p + 219 = 987 p = 768

13. ` Pairs of students should write three examples of real world equality scenarios (like those in the Guided Practice and Binder Notes). Then, pairs should trade with other pairs and write the equations using numbers and symbols.

14. Closure: We have been working on equations so far but tomorrow we will begin working on inequalities. Be sure to continue working on your homework assignment for this week.
