Much of the research into the development of new anticonvulsants is in the early stages of development (Phase II or earlier) Research into Antidepressants: There are at present 20 identified research and development projects underway in the area of depression. Eli Lilly’s Cymbalta approved by the FDA in 2004 is expected to reach blockbuster status. Research into Antipsychotics: Approximately 20 research and development projects are underway in an effort to discover the next big antipsychotic. Solvay Pharmaceutical’s Bifeprunox is a more advanced antipsychotic.To date the drug has shown none of the problematic side effects that accompany many of the existing products on the market.

Industry Trends (Cont’d) Negative Publicity: Both antipsychotics and antidepressants have come under increased scrutiny regarding their potential to cause harmful and in some cases deadly side effects. The American Diabetes Association issues an opinion singling out Zyprexa as the antipsychotic with the highest risk of diabetes. Researchers have determined that a link exists between the use of some antidepressants and suicidal tendencies in teenagers and children.
