5. COPLAND COMMUNITY SCHOOL History The school has experienced considerable turbulence in the past two years following: financial issues; the resignation of a head teacher; the suspension of the governing body and the creation of an Interim Executive Board; and two interim Head teachers - one for a term and one on a 0.6 FTE basis for twelve months. The school also suffered from the cancellation of its BSF re-build at an advanced stage of planning and engagement by staff, students and the community.

COPLAND COMMUNITY SCHOOL Ofsted grade ‘satisfactory’ (2010) key issues: Improve learning and progress in lessons through better teaching that: challenges all students and meets their individual needs, especially for those who are higher attainers and those who are not fully fluent in English is adapted using assessment throughout lessons routinely uses activity and discussion to engage students and help clarify their understanding develops students’ independence and creativity so that they are less reliant on support and take more initiative in assessing their own progress and understanding how to improve.

7. COPLAND COMMUNITY SCHOOL My background SLT roles leading school improvement in two (…eventually!) ‘Outstanding’ schools. Digital development at Bodmin College used Palm Zire 72 devices and students’ mobile phones circa 2006-8. COPLAND COMMUNITY SCHOOL The Project All Year 7 learners have been given an iPod touch A number of subject specific and cross-curricular apps have been installed on each device Bespoke applications using GoMo Each device will have access to the WLAN Part funded by the e-learning foundation and voluntary parental contributions Approximately 30% of parents/carers have made significant contributions towards the project

16. COPLAND COMMUNITY SCHOOL App development We are trying to develop apps that the students can use, at the moment we have discussed: A Copland app (planner) A questionnaire app (AFL and student voice tool) A EAL app The idea is that students can develop the apps and then other students can use them, they could also develop the apps as revision tools or as an alternative to presentations to share work with other students.

COPLAND COMMUNITY SCHOOL Student feedback “I like having the iPod as there are fun games to play that help me with my learning, especially a game where I sort out letters to form words” Kishan. “You can use the iPod wherever you go, there are special apps for different things like the Shakespeare app. It has helped my learning and it helps me to understand things more” Hamza.

18. COPLAND COMMUNITY SCHOOL Student feedback 10 Students were asked to rate the following statements from 1-5 (1 strongly disagree 5 strongly agree). Having an iPod helps me with my learning – average score 4 I enjoy using my iPod in lessons – average score 3.75 I use my iPod at home for learning – average score 2.0 (we need to look at this) The things that they said they enjoyed about using the iPod were: In lessons I like using the science and maths games as it helps me to learn new things I like using the Shakespeare app as we have found out lots of things about Shakespeare In Music we can use the piano and it means we all have enough equipment I enjoy using it at home to look up new information and do research I find it really useful as I can use it to help set reminders and organise myself

19. COPLAND COMMUNITY SCHOOL Staff feedback ‘I have used the i pods with five Yr 7 classes. They have used the Art periods app to research Pop art, the camera function to take photographs and the art camera app to create a pop art style picture. So far it has gone well: the pupil engagement is excellent. The pro's far out way the negatives: it’s allowing them to research independently and they are getting the opportunity to create digital work which Key Stage 3 classes have never done before.’
