Year 1 Aut 2 Curriculum Newsletter Welcome back, we hope you have had a good half term! We will be learning lots of exciting things this term and Christmas is coming! The children have settled really well into Year 1. Could you please leave your child at the door or gate in the morning as this will continue to encourage their independence. The class teacher will be available at the door in the mornings and the gate at the end of the day, please feel free to come and ask any questions or pass on relevant information to do with your child. Literacy The focus for this half term will be stories linked to the theme of light and dark. The children will be reading ‘Man on the Moon’, ‘Aliens love underpants’ and other stories. They will be learning about the story of ‘Rama and Sita’ linked to Diwali through drama. The children will be learning how to write a short story and a letter to the man in the moon! They will be working towards their Literacy targets for example, using full stops and capital letters and ‘wow’ words. Phonics will continue to be taught daily and the sounds they learn will be sent home with a task in their sound books. Numeracy In numeracy, we will be learning to: Double and halve numbers Odd and even numbers Partitioning numbers into tens and units Counting forwards and backwards. Recognise and visualise 2d shapes Recognise coins Solve problems involving money Count in tens. Topic This term we will cover two topics “Man on the Moon” and “Boing! Spring! Slide!”. In Man on the Moon we will be looking at space, light and dark and how light is used in festivals, such as the Hindu festival of Diwali and Christmas. In Boing! Spring! Slide! we will be investigating different mechanisms in pop-up books and cards. We will be learning to make a spring, a slide and a spin mechanism and then design a Christmas card with our own chosen mechanism in it. Science: Light and Dark R.E.: Diwali Art: Clay D.T.: Designing and making aliens, making a Christmas card. P.S.H.E.: Working together I.C.T.: Creating pictures on computers.

Learning together at home Numeracy Practice recognising coins Practice doubling and halving numbers Topic Use junk modelling to design and make a space rocket. Please can all rockets be brought into school by Friday 29 th November. These will be put on display for everyone to see when you come and visit on Thursday 5 th December. Literacy Share a selection of space, light and dark books together. Draw a picture from your favourite story to bring in and show us. Future Dates 4 th November – Inset 15 th November – Eco Day 5 th December – Celebration of Learning 2.30 (More information to follow) 13 th December – Christmas Fayre 16 th December – Nativity pm 17 th December – Nativity am 18 th December –Nativity am 18 th December - Christmas Lunch 19 th December – Christmas party 20 st December – Last day of term Assemblies The themes for our assemblies this term are: ‘Keeping Safe and remembering happy and sad times’ Please Note Library books are now changed on a Monday afternoon.
