23 July 20122James Fast, July 2012 B2GM High Level View Bars – Contract in place for full production – 10 blanks already produced and “delivered” (US-J funded) Up to 8 more will be ordered with US-J FY12 funds – 2 polished bars ordered – delivery ~December (DOE $$) Mirrors – Specifications settled – tilted mirror, 100 mm long – Nagoya has ordered prototype – due any day – PNNL issuing RFP for another prototype now (DOE $$) Prisms – Specifications less settled, but time to prototype – PNNL issuing RFP for prototype “option 5” design (DOE $$) 5 mm flat at bottom of prism at PMT end for seal surface

23 July 20125James Fast, July 2012 B2GM Outstanding Optics R&D Finalize mechanical design for quartz bar box to set final specifications for quartz prism – Many details in and around the prism/readout interface region that need to be finalized and tested before prism production Outstanding issues for the mirror – Tilted mirror looks good, but some concerns remain Mechanics of applying spring load in –Z direction on tilted surface Reconstruction algorithms for continuum of impact positions, momenta and angles has not been demonstrated and may be more difficult for the tilted mirror design Analyzed data with final optics will be needed for DOE approval for production – Earliest reasonable date for building prototype with final optics is around December DOE is working with us to relieve “CD approval” pressure on the production of the optics – Schedule is still tight, but we have some relief in early U.S. FY13

23 July 20127James Fast, July 2012 B2GM Changes to Plan DOE increased budget $1M to help us Additional prototypes – 2 bars, 2 mirrors and 2 prisms added to plan – plan to engage a second bar vendor for one prototype to mitigate risk Had direct measurement of quartz homogeneity made to validate material – Not measured by Corning for our grade of material – certified “by process control” – Results were excellent and are being used to tune process for removal of stress birefringence from cutting of blanks

23 July 20128James Fast, July 2012 B2GM Homogeneity Measurements Conducted by Aperture Optics Samples cut from same boules as bars Sized to be usable as mirror blanks “homogeneity of the index of refraction for the samples from boules 53201 and 52202 were well within the 5 ppm specification at 1.44 ppm and 3.17 ppm, respectively”

23 July 201210James Fast, July 2012 B2GM Summary Quartz bars are well underway – First prototypes made to final specifications will arrive at KEK at the end of the year Mirror and prism prototypes are underway – More work is required to commit to design Simulations and analysis over full iTOP fiducial volume Demonstration of a prototype with the final optics Completion of interfaces to readout and QBB DOE has been proactive in helping the project continue to progress in light of the review process and in anticipation of a continuing resolution in FY13 – Project passed a major milestone with the independent project review for CD-1: recommended for approval of CD-1 by ESAAB which should occur in August. – CD-3A for KLM module production also “blessed” by that review

23 July 201212James Fast, July 2012 B2GM Procurement Strategy Request for Interest for all three optics (July 2011) – Preliminary specifications developed for RFI – Vendors asked to comment on what specifications would be cost drivers or challenging to meet – Vendors to consider both fabrication and metrology challenges – Vendors to provide proposed delivery schedule with information on fraction of production capability to be used Contracting strategy is to use competitive, fixed price contracts with award based on total cost for full production – Minimize total cost (avoids low-balling initial phases) – Reduce cost/schedule uncertainty early in the project Risk remains, but is quantifiable using responses of all vendors – Consideration taken for utilizing multiple vendors to reduce risk Weighed against additional costs (if any) of doing so Limited FY12 funding and high unit cost makes this difficult this year

23 July 201213James Fast, July 2012 B2GM Potential Vendors Identified Aperture (Okamoto partner with mirror/prism capability in US) Heraeus (PANDA DIRC prototypes) InSync (was Boeing, Babar DIRC, PANDA DIRC prototypes) ITT Geospatial Systems Lyktorino LZOS (PANDA DIRC prototypes) Optical Solutions Inc. (mirrors/wedges only) Schott (PANDA DIRC prototypes) Zygo (interested in bars only at RFI; recently purchased new capability that may be able to fabricate mirrors and prisms) PANDA DIRC group is also discussing bars with Zygo and Zeiss

23 July 201214James Fast, July 2012 B2GM Bar Contract Structure Contract award based on total cost for full production –Goal: Reduce uncertainty in Cost and Schedule Contract issued as “firm fixed price” for the entire production of Quartz Bars (32+4 spares) –Initial award Phase I – 8 quartz blanks (US-J FY11) Phase IIa – 2 quartz blanks (US-J FY11) –Subsequent phases and notional funding sources Phase IIb – 4 polished bars (DOE FY12) Phase III – 8 quartz blanks (US-J FY12) Phase IVa – 10 quartz blanks (DOE FY13) Phase IVb – 16 polished bars DOE FY13) Phase Va – 8 quartz blanks (DOE FY14) Phase Vb – 16 polished bars (DOE FY14)
