Forestry Tent Project: Forestry Education in Venezuela: Capacity Development at the ULA Prof. Oswaldo Erazo
2
Some important aspects: ULA has a program called: Expocarreras «Carreer Fairs» Talks with Dr. Encinas Its aim is to give information about different admission ways and GUIDE students about their choices Only students in the last year of highschool Students have already chosen what they want to study
3
% of future applicants to different knowledge area (2014-2015) Only in Mérida estate Science and Technology % Social Sciences % Health Sciences % Sciences 2,3 Faculty of Law Science 14,8Medicine 14,8 Archicteture 4,7Education 10,8 Pharmacy and Bioanalysis 5,4 Engineering 21,8 Economic and Social Science 10,8Dentistry 4,1 Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Science 3,6 Arts 6,9 TOTAL 32,4 TOTAL 43,3 TOTAL 24,3

Some important aspects: In 2014, first meeting with Dr. Calkin Suárez, Dr. Encinas, Dr. J. Oballez, held at LNPF (ULA) It was conformed a work team with some professors and students Dr. Calkin put forward a kind of structure called Dome and talked about what it is good for
5
Some important aspects: It was discussed carefully the idea of a dome Instead of a dome, the best alternative was a TENT We came to the conclusion:
6
Why TO MANUFACTURE a tent? It is versatile Design Less amount of wood, easy to carry
7
Aims Promote the Forest Engineering carreer in schools Encourage people to protect the natural resources Participate actively in Forest-related events Show people wood as an excellent and versatile raw material for different purposes
8
Glued laminated beams Design flexibility: Wide range of standard dimension Manufactured to specific dimensions Easy to use with other materials Fast, light and easy to install Different shapes: Straight, curved
9
Environmental Sustainability: Wood is a 100% renewable raw material Manufacturing wood beams is less energy-consuming than for other material such concrete and steel CO2 is absorbed by wood and it does not give off new CO2
10
Caribbean pine wood (Density= 550 kg/m3) and Bamboo MC= 12% Knots, resins, juvenile wood and other defects in wooden pieces was removed Reinforced Polyvinyl acetate adhesive Adhesive dose was 400g/m2 per single glue line 1 ½” drywall screws were used in the internal joints Wood pressing process was curved so as to get a final half-arc shape 9 x 9 cm beam dimensions at the bottom, decreasing at the top up to 7 cm. Arc length formed by glue laminated beams was 5 m Technical aspects in the making of glued laminated beams for the Forestry Tent
11
The making of the Forestry Tent Design was made by Dr. Prof. Wilver Contreras
