Illustrator’s Graphics Uses vector graphics as opposed to bitmapped (or raster) images Not pixel based like Photoshop Vector art does not become pixilated when scaled Vectors are great for logos!

Vector Art and Logos Logos may need to be scaled to many sizes & vectors do not “blur” or become “fuzzy” at any scaled size

Working in Illustrator When you open a new document you can choose the orientation (landscape or portrait) The default size is “letter” (8.5 X 11) Change units to inches!

“Tearing Off” Tools There are still Hidden Tools like Photoshop You can “tear off” or remove a set of frequently used tools for your convenience Click and hold down on set of tools then drag over to edge and let go to “tear off” Click and drag to this edge, let go Now that set of hidden tools is separated!

Stroke & Fill Stroke is the outline of a shape ◦ Change the weight to make it thicker or thinner ◦ No stroke = / button on keyboard or ___ in swatches Fill is the color inside the shape ◦ No fill = / button on keyboard or ____ in swatches Stroke and Fill are located in the Appearance Panel

Creating Shapes Choose a shape tool from the Toolbar Click and Drag to create a shape ◦ Hold shift to keep shape proportional Click once on your Artboard with shape tool to type in exact dimensions of a shape Stroke (outline) Fill (Inside)

More Shapes When an item in Illustrator is selected it will look like this: You can scale and rotate without going to Edit > Transform…just select the image and go for it! Delete a shape by selecting it then pressing delete key (To make a star with more or less points, click and drag with the Star Shape Tool and push up and down arrows on the keyboard before letting go of the mouse!)

Selecting Images You must select things in Illustrator before you can change them! Selection Tool (black arrow) moves whole objects; select and scale or rotate Direct Selection Tool (white arrow) lets you manipulate individual anchor points Anchor Point…click or double click on this point with the Direct Selection Tool and drag to change the Shape using anchor points Add Anchor Points to manipulate using the “Add Anchor Point Tool” (Hidden under Pen Tool)

More Anchor Points… Rounded edges and shapes have anchor points too! ◦ Rounded anchor points show direction handles to change the curve of the shape or path Click on the anchor point with the Direct Selection Tool to show direction handles Direction Handles
