Finding the Lab Materials Open the “Assignments” folder. Open the “Get Assignments” folder. Open the “Science” folder. Open the “Stanley Mullin” folder (not “Stan”). Open the “Geology” folder. Open the folder “0 3D Guide to the Galaxy”. Open the file “2 chart_galaxy_types”.

Comparison Chart This file is a comparison chart that compares like and unlike characteristics of the 3 main types of galaxies: 1.Spiral Galaxies 2.Elliptical Galaxies 3.Irregular Galaxies (The chart is shown in slightly smaller size on the next slide for convenience.)
4
Comparison of 3 Types of Galaxies
5
Venn Diagram 1.Use the characteristics from the Comparison Chart to complete the 3-lobed Venn Diagram. 2.Place shared characteristics in the space where the circles of both galaxies that share that trait overlap (or where all 3 overlap in some cases). 3.Place unique characteristics in the circle segment that does not overlap for the one galaxy that shows that trait. (The Venn Diagram is shown on the next slide with one example of a unique trait and one example of a shared trait.)
6
Pinwheel Shape and Spiral Arms No Pinwheel Shape No Spiral Arms
7
Galaxy Comparison 1.Compare these 2 spiral galaxies. Why can’t we see the spiral arms of the Warped Galaxy?
8
Galaxy Comparison 2.The gray-white cloud visible at the edges of the disk of both galaxies is made up of gas and __________.
9
Galaxy Comparison 3.Which galaxy has a larger central core (“bulge”)? ___________________ Galaxy
10
Galaxy Comparison 4.The bright white objects above and below the galaxy plane of the warped galaxies are not individual stars but ________________ clusters: Each “spot” is a 100,000 or so tightly packed ancient stars.
11
Galaxy Comparison 5.Bright blue young stars and reddish star-forming regions are visible only in the flat _________ of each galaxy - not in their haloes.
12
Lab - 3-D Guide to the Galaxy 1.Once you have completed the pre-lab, you will need to complete the Lab – 3-D Guide to the Galaxy. 2.During this lab, you will look at several different representations of the Milky Way Galaxy, along with computer/artistic renderings of even larger structures that can be found in our vast universe.
13
3-D Guide to the Galaxy 3.Open these File Folders: Get Assignments/Science/Stanley Mullin/Geology/0 3D Guide to the Galaxy Jing Video Captures 2015 4.Watch the videos in order and follow the directions on your lab paper to answer all questions. Video #10 “freestyles” around the Milky Way to give you a final 3D view of the galaxy.
14
Star Movement in the Milky Way 1.Look at the image on the next slide and answer questions 22 and 23 on your lab paper. 2.The image shows the movement of stars in 3 different regions of the Milky Way Galaxy…
15
Star Movement in the Milky Way Red lines show the movement of stars in the galaxy’s dense central bulge. Yellow lines show the movement of stars in the disk of the galaxy. Green lines show the movement of stars in the halo of the galaxy.
