“…remember that you’re standing on a planet that’s evolving,
7
and revolving at 900 miles an hour,
8
that’s orbiting at 19 miles a second, so it’s reckoned,
9
a sun that is the source of all our power.
10
The sun and you and me, and all the stars that we can see
11
are moving at a million miles a day,
12
in an outer spiral arm, at forty thousand miles an hour, of the galaxy we call the Milky Way.

The Northern Milky Way

A view of the Milky Way from the southern hemisphere – towards the centre of our galaxy
15
Our galaxy itself contains a hundred billion stars.
16
It’s a hundred thousand light-years side-to-side.
17
It bulges in the middle, 16 000 light-years thick, 16 000 Light Years
18
but out by us it’s just 3000 light-years wide.
19
We’re thirty thousand light-years from galactic central point. 30 000 ly
20
We go ‘round every two hundred million years.
21
And our galaxy is only one of millions of billions
22
in this amazing and expanding universe.

Galaxies in collision
39
The universe itself keeps on expanding, and expanding,
40
in all of the directions it can whiz. every one is a galaxy
41
As fast as it can go, the speed of light you know,
42
12 million miles a minute, and that’s the fastest speed there is.
43
So remember when you’re feeling very small and insecure,
44
how amazingly unlikely is your birth.
45
And pray that there’s intelligent life somewhere up in space,
46
‘cause there’s bugger all down here on Earth.
