Muscles of the Trunk: AKA “The Core”
3
Anterior Core Muscles: Front
Rectus Abdominis External Oblique Internal Oblique Transverse Abdominis
4
Rectus Abdominis O: Costocartilage & Xiphoid Process
I: Pubic crest & Symphysis (Pelvis) A: Flexes Spine
5
External Oblique Outermost muscles of trunk
Fibers run like hands in pockets O: Ribs 5-12 I: Anterior pelvis A: Flexes and rotates spine
6
Internal Oblique O: Anterior pelvis I: Cartilage of ribs 8-12 A: Flexes and rotates spine
7
Transversus Abdominis
Deepest layer of abdominal muscle Fibers run horizontally A: Stabilize the pelvis!
8
Posterior Core Muscles: Back
Erector Spinae Multifidus
9
Erector Spinae O: Sacrum
At lumbar level it splits into three columns, each of which with 3 parts A: Extends spine
10
Multifidus Located on both sides of your spine
Run from your pelvis and low back all the way to your neck: each muscle spans 2-4 vertebrae A: Work with transversus abdominis to stabilize pelvis
